Debris Management During a Hurricane – K.L.E.A.N. Hawaii
This month the Hurricane Division of Hawaii Department of Transportation wants us to be aware of the complex and vital task that the state has of debris management during a hurricane or similar catastrophic event. We need to keep in mind that in addition to increased traffic the roads will be clogged due to a variety of debris and hazards. Downed power lines, trees, trash, furniture and household items dropped from moving vehicles or blown from properties are just some of the dangers we may face on the roads leading up to and in the aftermath of a hurricane. With so much mess to manage, the DOT will have to focus first on key areas, freeways, airports, harbors and Waikiki, reestablishing access and mitigating damage.
